Blame It on the Tools!

Do you say the “Pen Prayer” before you go to do calligraphy... “Please let it work”? This class is for everyone who wants to take control and be the boss of their tools.  Supplies: one NEW Brause nib (size your choice), one NEW Speedball C-2 pen, one Mitchell nib (old or new—size your choice), one old and cruddy pen nib, pen holder, few sheets of nice, smooth paper for testing water-based ink (I like Pelikan 4001) or walnut ink, one tube gouache, your choice (my choice Winsor-Newton), watercolor palette (my choice Prang), mixing brush, water pot, rag or paper towels

Gwen Weaver while studying at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., fell in love with pointed pen. Driven by this love, she continues to pursue its intricacies. The strokes and letters hidden in the pointed pen are varied and wonderful. She shares her experience with students by way of workshops that she teaches throughout the United States and Canada.

Pointed Pen Simplified using Pointed Pencil

Have you always wanted to learn pointed pen but were afraid to try it? You can erase that fear. This is a great opportunity to learn pointed pen in the easiest way by using pencils instead of dip pens and ink. The process is greatly simplified; shapes and pressure/release are the focus. Dark colored pencils will work well on light paper, and of course, light pencils on dark paper. The results will show the contrast achieved with pointed pen but with a lighter and slightly more textured sense, using the pencil.

Supplies: 12” ruler, light and dark color pencils (No-Blots work well), light and dark color paper, pencil sharpener. Softer pencils will give more contrast, depending on the paper
